NJ: Adventure Aquarium
I have so many questions: How do jellyfish not get their tentacles into knots? How do they not get tangled into the other jellyfish? If they do get tangled, how do they untangle?
In 1993-ish, my family visited the San Diego Zoo and I saw my very first hippopotamus submerged in water behind the glass of his enclosure. I was in awe. The sheer massive size of the hippo blew my mind. He (or she? Who remembers!) was as big as a Volkswagen but bounced and swam under water like it wasn’t the size of a small car. Not only was that hippo fascinatingly large but he was ADORABLE. Fat and round with big eyes… I was smitten.
I’ve been to plenty of zoos since but, while always hopeful for a hippo interaction, I’ve never seen another up close.
I did not expect hippos at the Adventure Aquaiurm in NJ. I have not visited an aquarium with a hippo exhibit before. OMG. What a treat!
Genny and Buttons were an absolute delight and clearly very happy to show themselves off like the adorable fat celebrities of the aquarium they are.
